The last 2023 Skills Maintenance (Requals) session will be held Saturday 16th Dec -There are spots available at 10am, 12.30 or 2.30pm.

Depending on water quality, sessions may be dry activities only. The wet elements of Skills Maintenance (Requals) will be conducted at a later date.

We have tried numerous processes over the years for ensuring that members who do water safety at carnivals have their contributions added to their record in Surfguard. No system has been perfect so let's try a new idea.

If you do water safety at a carnival please send an email by the Friday after the carnival to carnivals@mentonelsc.com with the details of your duty eg. Bill Smith JanJuc carnival 10/12/2023 water safety 2 hours or IRBC 4 hours and so on. 

It is your responsibility to check that the hours have been added (allow the admins a few days) and follow up if there's an issue. 

It is also your responsibility to send that information through to us by the Friday after the carnival.

Nippers is on for this Sunday. We expect to have a visit by Santa by Inflatable Rescue Boat (IRB) toward the end of the Nipper Session. There will be an area marked off with bunting in front of the club on the beach. 

The weather looks to be very good. Mostly sunny and a high of 24 degrees with light winds out of the WNW.

We will be doing a swim evaluation at 12noon (meet near BBQ area) for those Nippers who want to compete at Cosy Corner or Mt Martha.

We will have a used wetsuit sale at Nippers on Sunday 10 Jan.  If you would like to sell at wetsuit, bring the wetsuit and attach

Every year Mentone holds a Mixed Age Carnival for U08-U13 at Mentone beach. This event is a mixed age team event with beach and water events. Each team is lead by one of our awesome U14-U17 athletes. This is a fun and inclusive day and a good time for all.

The Mentone Gold and Mentone Mini Gold has been annual tradition at Mentone for many years.  These races feature individual and team endurance events. 

There are 3 different events on the day

• Mentone Mini Gold (U10-U13)  Run 3.5km, Board 1.2km, Swim 400m
• Mentone Gold (U14-U15) 5km Run, 2km Board, 1km Swim
• Mentone Gold (U17-Open) 5km Run, 10km Ski, 2km Board, 1km Swim

We have an annual program for U08-U13 in early January each year.  These sessions expand on key practical lifesaving skills including:

• Swimming
• Boarding
• Lifesaving techniques

We will create separate groups based on ages/capabilities.

This 3 day program is a great opportunity to tune up skills prior to Cosy Corner Carnival (5 January) and Mt Martha Carnival (28 January).

We encourage parents to also help with water safety. 

Sessions will be held the following dates/times

• Tuesday 2 January, 8:00am – 10:30am
• Wednesday 3 January, 8:00am – 10:30am
• Thursday 4 January, 8:00am – 10:30am

We have organised a Responsible Service of Alcohol (RSA) Course for the New Year on 30th January 2024.

Details for booking will be available in the next newsletter.

We encourage our Nippers to develop and practice their skills with our formal training sessions and also on their own.

Over the holiday period your Nipper will be able to use the MLSC boards as long as the club is open. The club will be open during patrols on Saturday and Sundays 10am to 5pm during December and January.

If you are using boards just make sure to handle with care (especially while on hard surfaces) and rinse with fresh water before returning to the rack.

We have a modified schedule for Nippers for January.

We will have the following sessions in January.

• Friday, 12 January
• Friday, 19 January

We will move back to Sundays for Nippers starting in February.

Mentone Seals is a program for teaching surf skills (board and swim) to Nippers who want to do more than just Sundays, but are still learning the skills.

Mentone Seals teaches the basics of:

• Swimming in open water (the first weeks we practice in water that they can stand in)
• Board paddling
• Reading conditions
• Catching waves
• Wading
• Board and Swim race starts

Mentone Seals is on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 5:30pm – 6:30pm

Training Dates and Times:

• Sunday 17th December - As MSAC is NOT available, LSV is running a SERC and CPR session at LSV (200 the Boulevard Port Melbourne) From 5.40pm to 7pm - for State and Development team Members. Any U14's who are doing CPR are also welcome to attend.

The rest of the year and January's training will be posted once confirmed, but tentative dates are as follows: 

• Friday 22nd Dec - MSAC 10am - 12pm.
• Thursday 28th Dec - MSAC SERC session 10am - 12pm
• Sunday 31st Dec -10am - 12pm
• Sunday 7th Jan - 5pm -7pm
• Sunday 14th Jan - 5pm - 7pm
• Wednesday 17th Training (and meeting at MSAC) 11.30am for training and then lunch and departure to accommodation for RLSSA nationals.
