Junior State March Past EOI

As you are all aware, at the Victorian Junior State Championships carnival there is a team event called the March Past. This is a traditional team event that involves a minimum of 12 athletes marching with a Belt n Reel plus flag bearer.


Mentone offer this event to Under 13's competing at states then roll down to Under 12’s and 11’s if need to get the minimum number of 12 athletes.


This year we will be training at the following days and times:

  • Thursday 22nd of Feb, 6.45pm ( straight after board training )
  • Tuesday 27th of Feb, 6.45 pm
  • Thursday 29th of Feb, 6.45pm
  • Tuesday 5th of March, 6.45pm

Adam Liddell, Brea Adams and Rebecca Kuntz will be coordinating the event and will advise who will be in the team.


To be considered for selection in the team you need to attend at least 75% of the above training sessions ( 3 out of 4 ).


Clint Robinson Training Sessions  2-3 March

Clint Robinson will be in Victoria for some training sessions on 2-3 March. These sessions will be at an ocean beach, most likely Anglesea, and focus on board skills (U10-Open), body surfing (U10-Open), ski (U17-Open).

 

For those of you who are not familiar with Clint. Clint Robinson is a professional lifesaving coach that has been working with Mentone LSC athletes for the last 12 years. He also writes our training programs and provides guidance to us on aspects of our competition program. Clint has won over 40 Aussie titles and several Olympic medals. He competed for many years in the Uncle Toby Ironman series. He is considered one of the best lifesaving athletes to participate in the sport.

 

Current schedule:

 

Saturday 2 March

  • 8:30am – 10:00am  Board U14-Open
  • 10:15am – 11:30am  Body Surfing U13-Open
  • 11:45am – 1:15pm  Board Session (U10-U13)
  • 1:30pm – 2:30pm  Body Surfing U10-U12

Sunday 3 March

  • 8:30am – 12noon  Ski session (starts, finish, wave management)

Cost:

  • Nipper (board + body surf) $40
  • Youth/Senior (board + body surf) $40
  • Senior (Mal + body surf + ski) $80

Victoria Junior State Lifesaving Championships (U09-U13)

Victoria Junior Lifesaving State Championships is the final event for the Junior summer competition season. The 2023/24 Victorian Juniors Championships will be held at Warrnambool SLSC from 8-10 March 2024.


This event is over two and half days covering beach and surf individual and team events. Medals are given for first, second and third and includes over 35 clubs from across Victoria. 

 

For team events we are allowed to participate in composite teams if we do not have enough athletes for a team. Composite teams will earn team points and can also win medals. Composite teams are assigned on the day based on random assignment.

 

Team Dinner

We will have a team dinner at Simon’s Restaurant (located at Warrnambool SLSC) on Sunday night. This is a great location and great night to celebrate the end of State Champs.

Victoria Youth/Senior Lifesaving State Championships

Victoria Youth/Senior Lifesaving State Championships is the final event for the summer competition season. The event will take place later this year than usual. 

 

This year’s Senior State Champs is from Friday 22 March until Sunday 24 March. The events on Friday typically start in the afternoon. LSV will publish a schedule soon, but events are subject to change in order based on conditions (waves, tides, heat, etc).

 

This year’s State Championship will take place in Ocean Grove, Victoria.

 

There is a change this year to the Composite team rules allowing us to have an athlete enter a composite team if we do not have the numbers needed to fill out a team.

U13 LSV Development Camp - 5th - 7th April 2024 (Lake Dewar Lodge YMCA)

The U13 development camp is an opportunity for youth members to develop their interpersonal skills, broaden their understanding of lifesaving, and access support that will help them as they progress through their lifesaving journeys.


During this three-day, live-in camp participants will be mentored by current outstanding volunteer leaders as they learn, share and network with like-minded lifesavers from across the state. Note that a bus will leave LSV headquarters in Port Melbourne around 4pm on the 5th to provide transport, with return on the 7th.


The objectives of the U/13 development camp are to:

  • develop confidence, communication and teamwork skills
  • gain an introduction to lifesaving pathways and opportunities
  • develop a network of friends across the state in a safe and welcoming environment
  • gain an understanding of leadership qualities, and how leadership is present in lifesaving

All applicants must be:

  • aged 12 or 13 years at the time of the camp
  • in good standing with their club
  • interested in and excited about meeting other members from Victorian clubs
  • keen to learn more about lifesaving and future opportunities

The Aussies (National Lifesaving Championships)

The National Lifesaving Championships 'Aussies' takes place at different locations predominantly in Queensland and occasionally WA. This event is the final competitive event for the Summer Surf Lifesaving Season. The Aussies hav beach and surf events for U13-Masters. This year the Aussies will host 480 events and over 300 surf lifesaving club athletes. This event is an awesome experience for athletes and spectators.

 

This year’s Aussies will be held on the Sunshine Coast across the four beaches.  Events types are assigned to different beaches

The Aussies are being held between 13 and 21 April. The age groups are spread throughout the 8 days.

Team and Transport

Mentone will be sending a team and will be transporting craft via trailer.

Champion Junior Lifesaver Development Day – Mentone LSC

On the 10th of Feb a group of Mentone LSC youth participated in the Junior Lifesaver Development Day at LSV. Jade Wheeler, Keeley Watkins and Angus Liddell represented MLSC and had a great day.

 

The Champion Junior Lifesaver Development Day is a reward and recognition day for youth members that have gone above and beyond within their respected clubs.


It is an opportunity to come together with like-minded members to build on SRC skills, participate in development workshops and explore the different services and pathways through Life Saving Victoria.


Members nominated for the day were in the running for the Mike Martin Champion Junior Lifesaver award, which aims to recognise and celebrate the achievements and commitment of our youth members to their club and lifesaving movement.


Mike Martin Champion Junior Lifesaver Award

This award forms part of LSV’s member recognition awards and celebrates the achievements and commitment of our youth members.  


The overarching aim of this award is to showcase the important contribution of our youth members to lifesaving as well as encourage the development of strong, confident, and committed youth members who will become the leaders of the lifesaving movement long into the future.


Award Selection Process

The 2023 Mike Martin Champion Junior Lifesaver Award, will be selected on the following criteria:

  • Nominees’ application to the Champion Junior Lifesaver Development Day
  • Endorsement support letter provided by the club
  • Online interview conducted prior to the day
  • On-day participation; demonstration of leadership and teamwork attributes as well as lifesaving knowledge and skills

All three Mentone athletes had a fantastic day, highlighted by Angus Liddell placing 2nd overall on the day.
