Culture Is Built on the Beach

This weekend’s Pink Patrol and Pride Patrol are more than themed patrols on the calendar. They are visible reminders of the culture we are building every time we put on the red and yellow. Culture isn’t written in a policy document or created in a meeting – it’s shaped on the beach, in how we support each other, who feels confident stepping forward, and whether every member feels safe to show up as themselves.

Pink Patrol celebrates the leadership and contribution of women in lifesaving, past and present, and reminds us that strong, capable female role models inspire the next generation. Pride Patrol sends an equally powerful message: that our club is a place where diversity is welcomed and respected. When members see themselves reflected in leadership, on patrol, and in our community, it strengthens belonging, confidence and participation. That visibility matters.

Member protection is not just about responding to problems. It’s about proactively creating an environment where respect is the norm and inclusion is visible. By showing up, wearing pink, flying the rainbow flag, or simply standing alongside your fellow members in support, you are helping shape the kind of club Mentone LSC continues to be – safe, welcoming and proud of who we are. 

Culture doesn’t happen by accident – it’s built by the people who show up, live our values, and choose every day to make our beach a place where everyone feels respected and safe.

Clear Boundaries, Safe Interactions

Clear and respectful boundaries help create safe, positive environments for everyone involved in surf life saving. At Mentone Life Saving Club, appropriate adult–child interactions are about keeping communication professional, supervision visible, and support focused on learning, safety and enjoyment. These expectations apply across training, carnivals, travel, and club activities, and help ensure junior members feel secure while volunteers are supported in their roles.

Boundaries also build trust and confidence. When expectations are clear and consistent, children and young people understand what behaviour is appropriate, who they can turn to for support, and how to feel safe in different club settings. For adults, clear boundaries remove uncertainty and provide confidence that interactions are appropriate, transparent and in line with club values.

Being mindful of boundaries at all times – on the sand, in the clubhouse and at events – reinforces a culture of respect, accountability and shared responsibility. When everyone understands their role, we create environments where learning, participation and enjoyment can thrive for all members of Mentone Life Saving Club.

Everyone Belongs at Mentone LSC

Mentone Life Saving Club is built on community – people of different ages, abilities and backgrounds coming together with a shared purpose. Creating an inclusive club means making sure everyone feels welcome, respected and supported, whether they are a junior member, parent, volunteer, official or long-standing member. Belonging is not about fitting a single mould; it’s about feeling accepted for who you are and knowing you have a place within the club.

Inclusion is shaped through everyday interactions. Small actions – using respectful language, being patient, offering help, and remaining open-minded – can have a significant impact on how people experience the club. Being inclusive also means recognising that some members may need extra support or understanding to participate fully, and responding with empathy and respect.

When members feel they belong, they are more likely to get involved, speak up, and support one another. At Mentone Life Saving Club, keeping children and young people safe isn’t just about policies – it’s about everyday actions. A child-safe environment looks like clear supervision at training, respectful communication from coaches and leaders, and adults being mindful of boundaries at all times. It also means ensuring change rooms, transport arrangements and one-on-one interactions are handled in ways that protect both our junior members and the volunteers who support them.

At carnivals and social events, the same values apply beyond the sand. We look out for each other, speak up if something doesn’t feel right, and remember that our behaviour sets the standard for the club. When everyone understands their role in creating a safe, respectful environment, children can focus on learning, growing and enjoying surf life saving, and parents can feel confident their kids are in good hands.
